Our Dance Form
Tribal
bellydance is an amalgamation of styles from India, North Africa,
Spain, and the Middle East. Elements of Flamenco, bhangra,
Bharatanatyam,
Turkish Rom, and Raqs Sharqi are often used in creating the vocabulary.
Music can range from traditional Ghawazee folk songs and rhythms to
modern industrial compositions. Finger cymbals (zils) are commonly
played by the dancers as a natural accompaniment.
TerraNova Tribal draws inspiration from the American Tribal Style (ATS) formulated by Carolena Nericcio of FatChanceBellyDance. ATS is an improvisational style in which dancers share a common set of movements (or "dance language"), and follow subtle cues given by alternating lead dancers. The joy of this style is found in the unchoreographed and egalitarian interaction within the tribe of dancers.
We use the FatChanceBellyDance core vocabulary, then add our own signature moves to the mix, creating a style uniquely our own. We love to share our dance through performance as well as instruction, and hope that you can join us at our next show or class session!
